U.S. FRESH PRODUCE MARKETS: MARKETING CHANNELS, TRADE PRACTICES, AND RETAIL PRICING BEHAVIOR AgEcon
Dimitri, Carolyn; Tegene, Abebayehu; Kaufman, Phillip R..
Retail consolidation, technological change in production and marketing, and growing consumer demand for produce have altered the traditional market relationships between producers, wholesalers, and retailers. Increasingly, produce suppliers are asked to provide additional marketing services and incentives in exchange for volume purchases and other commitments by buyers. This report synthesizes the results from a multiphase project that examined the dynamics of produce marketing, the produce shipper-retailer relationship, and how changes in the produce market affect the relative market influence of producers, retailers, and consumers.

Cooperatives are not only a legal form, but also a form of organisation, which is owned by a group of individuals. For gaining and sustaining competitiveness cooperatives are forced to grow into certain minimum optimal size categories. Common measures of size are turnover or total assets. But, for cooperatives the number of members has been a quite popular measure for cooperatives' success, size, and their attractiveness. Although often mentioned, the number of members has only been taken as a given value, ignoring the influence of the group itself on its own size. However, there has been no attempt to measure the potential size of a group and its growth dynamic under a given set-up. With the development of a strategic decision game for a hypothetical...

Weed interference periods in sesame crop Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Lins,Hamurábi Anizio; Souza,Matheus de Freitas; Albuquerque,José Ricardo Tavares de; Santos,Manoel Galdino dos; Barros Júnior,Aurélio Paes; Silva,Daniel Valadão.
ABSTRACT The sesame crop (Sesamum indicum L.) is sensitive to competition with weeds because of its low competitiveness that is directly linked to its slow initial growth. The control of weeds in the crop is an essential practice to ensure the high productivity of this oilseed. Therefore, to define the critical period of interference prevention is important to ensure efficiency and low control costs. Factors such as cultivar, environmental conditions, and cultivation system may alter the critical weed interference prevention period (CPWC). Therefore, the objective of this work was to determine the critical weed interference prevention period in two sesame cultivars. The critical weed interference prevention period for sesame cultivars, BRS Seda and CNPA...

When everything is not everywhere but species evolve: an alternative method to model adaptive properties of marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Sauterey, Boris; Ward, Ben A.; Follows, Michael J.; Bowler, Chris; Claessen, David.
The functional and taxonomic biogeography of marine microbial systems reflects the current state of an evolving system. Current models of marine microbial systems and biogeochemical cycles do not reflect this fundamental organizing principle. Here, we investigate the evolutionary adaptive potential of marine microbial systems under environmental change and introduce explicit Darwinian adaptation into an ocean modelling framework, simulating evolving phytoplankton communities in space and time. To this end, we adopt tools from adaptive dynamics theory, evaluating the fitness of invading mutants over annual timescales, replacing the resident if a fitter mutant arises. Using the evolutionary framework, we examine how community assembly, specifically the...
